CONCEPT NOTE

It is well known that 2009 is a crucial year in the international effort to address climate change, culminating in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 15) in Copenhagen, 7-18 December. In 2007, Parties agreed to shape an ambitious and effective international response to climate change, to be agreed at Copenhagen.
Meanwhile, the Symposium will take place only a few days after the Euro-Mediterranean Meeting of Ministers for the Environment where progress made will be assessed and decisions for the immediate next steps to effectively address their common goal to tackle the top sources of Mediterranean pollution by the year 2020 through the Horizon 2020 initiative will be taken. The Horizon 2020 initiative aims to reduce the most significant pollution sources of the Mediterranean focussing on urban waste water, municipal waste and industrial emissions responsible for up to 80% of pollution in the Mediterranean Sea.
In light of the above, the Mediterranean Symposium will focus on relevant institutional and technological aspects linking the two aforementioned political processes, through a set of three sessions, each one dedicated to a specific thematic area central to adaptation to climate change in the Mediterranean region:

Session 1: October 23, 10:00-13:00, Non Conventional Water Resources (treated wastewater (regenerated water) reuse, seawater desalination, virtual water, etc.)
Session 2: October 23, 14:00-17:00, Urban Solid Waste management with emphasis on Reuse, Recycling, Composting, etc.
Session 3: October 24, 10:00-13:00, Educating on Sustainable Energy  Options and Lifestyles

The Mediterranean Symposium is organized within the framework of the Leaderexpo exhibitions (Envirotech ’09: 5th International Exhibition on Water and Environment Technologies, 4th International Exhibition on Energy Photovoltaic ‘09) and part of the Athens October 2009 Events (see attached table) co-organised by MIO-ECSDE, GWP-Med, the University of Athens, UNESCO-BRESCE and SEV-WBCSD.
